Maintenance Guide

Here are some best practices for maintaining aluminum railing and decking:

  1. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean the aluminum railing and decking surfaces to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Use a mild detergent or a solution of water and gentle soap. Avoid using harsh abrasives or chemicals that can damage the aluminum finish.
  2. Avoid Abrasive Tools: When cleaning or removing stubborn stains, avoid using abrasive tools such as steel wool or wire brushes, as they can scratch the aluminum surface. Instead, use a soft cloth or a non-abrasive sponge.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly: After cleaning, rinse the railing and decking thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue from the cleaning solution. This helps prevent the buildup of soapy residue or chemicals that could cause discoloration or corrosion over time.
  4. Inspect for Damage: Regularly inspect the aluminum railing and decking for any signs of damage, such as loose or damaged sections, bent or dented areas, or corrosion. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the structural integrity of the railing and decking.
  5. Protect from Abrasive Materials: Avoid placing abrasive materials directly on the aluminum surface, such as potted plants with rough bases or metal objects that can scratch or cause corrosion. Use protective pads or coasters to prevent direct contact.
  6. Apply a Protective Coating: Consider applying a protective coating or sealant specifically designed for aluminum surfaces. This can help protect the railing and decking from UV rays, oxidation, and environmental elements, extending their lifespan and maintaining their appearance.
  7. Remove Snow and Ice Carefully: During winter months, remove snow and ice from the aluminum railing and decking using a plastic shovel or a broom with soft bristles. Avoid using metal shovels or sharp objects that can scratch or dent the surface.
  8. Address Salt Exposure: If the aluminum railing and decking are exposed to saltwater or de-icing salts, rinse them with freshwater regularly to remove salt residue. Salt can accelerate corrosion, so proper rinsing is essential.
  9. Maintain Proper Drainage: Ensure that the aluminum decking has proper drainage to prevent standing water, which can lead to discoloration or corrosion. Clear any debris that may obstruct the drainage system.
  10. Follow Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations for maintenance and care specific to your aluminum railing and decking. They may provide specific instructions and products to use or avoid.

By following these best practices, you can help maintain the condition, appearance, and longevity of your aluminum railing and decking.
